Eliminate Delusions with Utmost Sincerity
「我們的心是否照顧好嗎?過去的是否已清除?清淨了沒?清淨之後,我們是否有時時把它保護住?」這是很重要,是修行的第一關門。
Have we been taking good care of our minds? Have we swept away the defilements of our past? After we have cleansed our minds, are we always safeguarding them? This is very important because it is the first gate of spiritual practice.
我們要知道「得生人身難」呀,我們在六道中,要真正在人道實在是很困難。得到了人身在人道,那麼要能夠六根端正,意思就是說身心健康也不容易。我們現在也都得到了,但是「得聞正法」更加不容易,我們也都得到了。我們入佛門、聞佛法,又身體力行在菩薩道中,這是多麼有福的人!
"This precious human body is hard to come by." Among the Six Destinies, to be born as human is very rare. If we are born as human in this world, we want our Six Roots to work properly. To be physically and mentally healthy is rare. Even if we are healthy, to be able to "hear the True Dharma" is even more rare. We have become Buddhist practitioners, heard the Buddha-Dharma and are practicing the Bodhisattva-path. How blessed we are!
所以我們人人要很知足,更加要很惜福;我們惜福就是要造福,因為我們得到很不容易得到的人身,得到很不容易得到的正法,我們又能夠行在正法中,所以大家應該要珍惜。
So we all must be content. Even more so, we must cherish our blessings. Cherish blessings by creating more blessings. We have attained this precious human body, learned the hard-to-attain True Dharma and are practicing accordingly. So we all must cherish what we have.
之前不是也說過:「我們要發露懺悔。」有了錯誤,我們應該要發自內心的虔誠,從我們的口中要說出來——錯了就是錯了,不對就是不對。那我們對人,不只是在佛前說:「我懺悔,我發露。」我們只是對佛說是不夠的,我們要向人表白。
As mentioned before, we must repent openly. When we make a mistake, we must admit openly from the heart. We must know that we have done something wrong. We must admit it to other people, and not only say, "I repent, I admit it." before the Buddha. It is not enough to say it only to Him. We must admit these mistakes to others also.
所以佛在世時他就說戒,半月半月誦戒,就是在大眾中大家聚過來,對大眾說:「我要向大家懺摩,我要向大家來表白,我在這半個月中曾起心動念,我有做了什麼不好的事情。我若是不說,別人可以提出來告訴我,向大眾說出來我的錯誤。」
When the Buddha was alive, He taught the precepts. Everyone would recite them at bi-monthly sessions. At these gatherings, some would say, "I want to repent in front of everyone. I want to disclose that in the past two weeks. I have given rise to false thoughts. I have done some unwholesome things." If one does not repent openly, others may point it out to him or her and tell others about these mistakes.
佛陀就是要我們的心不能覆藏,覆藏了錯誤,那這樣我們就像心有污染;好不容易它已經擦乾淨了,我們的這個習氣如果再犯、再覆藏,那如此還是一樣會囤積著污染,還是一樣囤積著無明。所以才說半月半月誦戒,互相來懺摩啟發。
The Buddha wanted to ensure that we do not hide our mistakes. If we conceal them, it is not easy to wash away the impurities. If we hide these mistakes and repeat them, we defile our minds and accumulate ignorance. So, the semi-monthly sessions inspired people to repent.
這也是因為這樣,所以經文常常出現說「發露懺悔」,或是「悲切懺悔」,這都常常在經典中看到。所以我們若要真正發露懺悔,這是一個法。
For this reason, the Sutras often mention "open repentance" and "sincere repentance". We frequently find these concepts in the Sutras. So to truly repent is a method of practice.
我們要如何修行?你若是沒去除煩惱,沒有真正的改過,這個法我們若沒有表達出來,那這樣我們要再向前走的路就難了。
How do we engage in this spiritual practice? If we still have afflictions, it means that we have not yet changed. If we do not express ourselves openly, then the path that we want to move forward on becomes very difficult.
若欲行此法者
先當外肅形儀
瞻奉尊像 內起敬意
緣於想法 懇切至禱
生二種心
Those who would like to practice this teaching should express external reverence when viewing the Buddha statue. They invoke reverence in every thought. From this deep sincerity, two thoughts arise.
再看看經文中說:「若欲行此法者,先當外肅形儀,瞻奉尊像;內起敬意,緣於想法;懇切至禱,生二種心。」
Those who would like to practice this teaching should express external reverence when viewing the Buddha statue. They invoke reverence in every thought. From this deep sincerity, two thoughts arise.
所以我們若欲行懺悔之法,我們就要欲行此法者「先當外肅形儀,瞻奉尊像」,這是一個法。你真正懺悔了嗎?第一個的關卡,就是要從我們的身形,要真正的端莊,那衣冠要端正。
Those who would like to practice the teaching of repentance should "express reverence toward the Buddha statue". This is the teaching. Have you really repented? The first criteria of repentance is that we must look dignified and dress properly.
懺悔之法者
必先將身形容儀端肅
瞻尊佛像是為外恭
Those who want to practice repentance should appear dignified when viewing the statue of the Buddha. This is to express respect externally.
我們要去拜佛,不能說很草率或者是很邋遢。
When we pay homage to the Buddha, we should not dress carelessly or sloppily.
你看你們每天早上要上大殿,看看海青袈裟,這麼整齊的上大殿。大家次序排班,隊伍要整齊,這也是表示尊重。
During the morning practice in the great hall, you see everyone clad in robes, entering in an orderly manner, and lining up in groups. This is a way of showing respect.
除了我們的形態要端莊,而且站好了很端正,要仰視佛像,用著很虔誠的歡喜心,自然我們的心歡喜,佛也就歡喜。我們的心虔誠,那麼佛也歡喜,所以這就是我們懺悔的方法,一定要用很端莊真正很端肅的威儀,來瞻奉尊顏。同時內心就起敬意,那因為我們有這個因緣,能夠每天早上都這樣,這個緣成就我們每一天可以集合在這個地方,我們一定要用很恭敬的心,恭敬這分緣,恭敬我們在這個道場中。
We also must look dignified by standing properly and upright. Look up at the statue of the Buddha with reverence and joy. As we are happy, naturally the Buddha will also be happy. If we are earnest and pious, the Buddha will be joyful. This is our way of repentance. We must have a very proper and dignified manner when we pay homage to the Buddha. We must also have a respectful heart. Because of our karmic connection with the Buddha, we can do this every morning. This karmic relationship enables us to assemble here every day. We must have deep reverence and respect for this karmic affinity and for this spiritual community. We must have such mindsets.
一定要有這種想法,所以才能「懇切至禱」。
So, we can practice "with utmost sincerity".
我們若能懂得有這麼好的因緣,站在佛前要來向佛禮拜而修行,我們若想到這些,有這麼多因緣才可以集合。每個人想想看,「感恩啊,感恩父母給我們的人身;感恩父母讓我們身心健康,能夠允許我們出家。」或是「感恩很多的因緣來成就我們,讓我們能夠入佛門。」「感恩啊!感恩有很多人來成就我們,讓我們能信奉三寶,能入於正法,能夠行在菩薩道中!」諸如此類的想法,如此我們的心,很自然就能生起很懇切。
If we can understand the good affinity we have to pay our respects in front of Buddha, if we realize that many karmic causes and conditions had to come together, we will be grateful to be here. "Be grateful that your parents gave us life. Be grateful that they nurtured our health and allowed us to become monastics. Also be grateful for the karmic connections that have enabled you to learn Buddhism." "Be thankful! Be thankful that many people helped us so that we can have faith in the Three Treasures and enter the realm of the True Dharma to practice on the Bodhisattva-path." With these thoughts, sincerity naturally fills our hearts.
這個緣來得不容易,既然有這麼多好的緣,我們怎麼能夠不懇切呢?
These connections are so hard to come by. Since we have obtained them, how can we not be earnest?
懇切就是真正的十分至誠,那種真正十分恭敬,真正非常誠懇,那樣懇切的心態,那樣以此至誠來祈禱,這是我們每天早上都應該有的。
To be earnest is to be utterly sincere and extremely respectful. Be very sincere. Praying with deep sincerity is what we should do every morning.
爐香讚
爐香乍爇 法界蒙薰
諸佛海會悉遙聞
隨處結祥雲
誠意方殷 諸佛現全身
南無香雲蓋萻薩摩訶薩
The most important thing when we perform the Incense Chant is sincerity. It is the most important part of paying respect to the Buddha. It is the first criteria.
在「法華經序」也是對大家這麼說過,那就是在爐香讚——
We talked about The Preface of the Lotus Sutra.
爐香讚
爐香乍爇,法界蒙薰,諸佛海會悉遙聞;
隨處結祥雲,誠意方殷,諸佛現全身。
南無香雲蓋菩薩摩訶薩。
The most important thing when we perform the Incense Chant is sincerity. It is the most important part of paying respect to the Buddha. It is the first criteria.
那時就要「誠意方殷」,那種最懇切的誠意,這就是我們禮佛,最重要的一個法,就是第一道門。這個門檻能跨過來,我們才是真正至誠的佛子;這個門檻如果跨不過,我們沒有虔誠的心,只是名字上的佛教徒,這樣是沒有用的。所以我們一定要有,懇切至禱這分心。
If we can be truly reverent, then we are true disciples of the Buddha. If we cannot be truly reverent, then we are Buddhists in name only. That is useless. So we must be utterly sincere, not just toward the image of the Buddha, but also toward all people.
不只是對佛像,我們對人人也都是一樣,不論是對事、對人、對物,一樣我們都要內起敬意,十分懇切的心來對人、對事,所以這是我們的心態。
Whether we are dealing with people or matters, we should be sincere and respectful. That is how we should consistently behave.
所以說起來,我們自己一定要記得很用心,我們在禮佛時,或者是再平時行、住、坐、臥中,我們一定要「現前介爾一念之心」。
We must pay attention to this. Whether we are paying homage to the Buddha or just living our daily lives, we must "be aware of any arising thoughts".
現前介爾一念之心
放下迷思不起亂想
懇切至誠 是名內敬
We must let go of delusions and confusions. Be utterly sincere. This is having respect internally.
「介爾一念之心」,就是說這個心,平常時待人處事或者是面對佛像時的這念心。就是我們的心和佛的心中間這念心,那就是要「現前介爾一念之心,放下迷思不起亂想;要懇切至誠,是名內敬。」
This refers to every single thought we have, whether we are interacting with people or viewing an image of the Buddha. Thoughts are what separate us from the Buddha. We must let go of delusions and confusions. Be utterly sincere. This is having respect internally.
我們站在佛前或者是做什麼樣的事情?身體在那裡,但是我們的思想,我們的頭腦裡就是迷思,想入非非,到底飛到哪裡去?這就是心念不一致。
Whether we are in front of the Buddha or dealing with other people, though our body is present, our thoughts are distracted by delusions and confusions. Where have our minds gone? Our bodies and minds are not unified.
我們在這之間,我們和佛,我們面對著佛的這念心,這之間的心絕對要放下迷思,不要再胡思亂想了;不要有什麼樣的煩惱心。所以我們要很虔誠、很乾淨很虔誠的心,這才叫做內敬。
When we are facing an image of the Buddha, our thoughts must be free of delusions. We must refrain from having random thoughts. We must eliminate all afflictions. When we have a clear and sincere heart, we have respect internally.
以此內敬外恭
緣想聖境之法
如此懇切至禱
生出二種心來
With utmost respect internally and externally, visualize the teachings of the noble state. Praying with deep sincerity will inspire two thoughts to arise.
「以此內敬外恭,緣想聖境之法,如此懇切至禱,生出二種心來,」那這就是一個方法。
"With utmost respect internally and externally, visualize the teachings of the noble state. Praying with deep sincerity will inspire two thoughts to arise." This is the method.
因為我們之後還要再說「二種心」,所以在這之間我們一定要先能夠「內敬」——內心要先有真正的恭敬,外面才有很虔誠的形態。所以內敬外恭,恭就是恭敬。
We will discuss the "two thoughts" later. We must first have respect from within. Only with this respect can we have the outward manifestation of sincerity. So we maintain respect internally and externally.
我們要緣想著那種「聖境之法」——「靜寂清澄,志玄虛漠」,這就是一個聖境。聖人的境界才能有辦法「靜寂清澄,志玄虛漠」這種的境界,所以我們一定要很懇切。
Visualize the "teachings of the noble state". The state of absolute tranquility and clarity with vows as vast as the universe; this is the noble state that only a saint can achieve. Their minds remain pure and tranquil, with vows as vast as the universe. We must be very sincere.
所以在佛經,就有這樣的一段文字——
The following passage is from the Sutras.
在佛的時代,在伽蘭陀竹林園中,當時王舍城中有一位貧人,非常非常的貧困、極貧,就是最貧困的,令人看了就生起憐憫,很可憐的形態。
During the Buddha's time, when He stayed in Kalandaka's bamboo grove, there was an extremely poor person in Rajagriha. He was so poor that whenever anyone saw him, they pitied him. He looked very pitiful.
但是雖然他那麼貧困,不過他曾聽過佛說法,所以他在佛法中生起了清淨信。雖然聽佛說法之後,他深信不移,非常相信佛所說的法,所以他心生信仰,他的身形就持戒,淨持戒,他就能持淨戒。佛陀所說的法,他只聽了一點,盡量能聽就去聽法。但是佛來去無定所,他很貧困,所以要聽法也很少;不過他聽了就不斷背誦。
But even in such poverty, he attended the Buddha's sermons and from the teachings he gained clear and pure faith. After attending the sermons, he found a deep faith in the Buddha's teachings. Because he had faith in his heart, he physically practiced to uphold the precepts. He maintained a pure heart by upholding the precepts. He only heard small parts of the teachings. He tried his best to attend all the sermons, but the Buddha often traveled to other places. Since he was poor, he could only attend a few of the teachings. But he recited and memorized one of the phrases that he had heard.
同一句話,佛陀所說,他聽了一點,就不斷不斷背誦,所以他知道要布施。貧困就是過去,沒有布施也沒有造福,所以這輩子這麼樣的貧困,他非常了解。所以他在乞食的時後或是在勞動,即便得到一點點,他還是要布施。所以布施雖然不多,但是盡他一點的力量,還是一樣布施。
Even though he only heard a little bit, he constantly recited it. So he learned to give alms. He understood that in his past lives he had not been charitable, which led to his poverty in this life. He clearly understood that. So no matter how little he received from begging or menial work, he still gave alms. Although it was never much, he did his best. It was still very charitable.
所以得此四事因緣果報,因為「他能夠聽到佛法,他能夠生起信心;起信心之後,他能夠持戒;持戒之後,他能夠背誦;背誦之後,他能夠盡心力去幫助人。」這四種事情,光是這四種事的因緣果報,身壞命終,往生後他就生忉利天了。
So he reaped the reward of the Four Deeds. He gained faith after he heard the Buddha's teachings. Because of his faith, he kept the precepts in his daily life. After keeping the precepts, he would recite the Buddha's teachings. With the recitation, he applied the teachings and helped others. The karmic seeds from these Four Deeds caused him to be reborn in Tusita Heaven after he died.
生忉利天勝妙善處
此新生天有三事勝
一色貌勝
二名稱勝
三壽命勝
《別譯雜阿含經》
When someone was born in the Tusita Heaven, he had three supreme qualities. The first was "superior appearance". He looked very dignified. The second was "superior reputation".
他生往忉利天時,有三樣勝事:第一是、一色貌勝,真正的端莊;第二是、二名稱勝,這個人可以升遷來到忉利天,這非常不簡單;第三是、三壽命勝。所以在經文中說:「生忉利天勝妙善處。此新生天有三事勝,一色貌勝,二名稱勝,三壽命勝。」
When he was born in the Tusita Heaven, he had three supreme qualities. The first was "superior appearance". He looked very dignified. The second was "superior reputation". Being reborn in Tusita Heaven is a very difficult achievement. The third is "superior life span".
因為天壽命就長了,所以也能夠得到諸天看到他。能夠新生來到這裡,大家都是起了恭敬心,所以這些天人就去向帝釋報告,又新生了一位來到忉利天,他令大家見了很恭敬歡喜。
In Heaven, he had a longer life. When all the heavenly beings saw that he was reborn in heaven, they were all very respectful of him. They then reported to their king, Sakra, that a person who was newly reborn in Tusita Heaven was making everyone feel respectful and happy.
帝釋就對大家說:「我知道,我已經早就知道這個人會生來忉利天,我知道了。因為他本來在人間,是那麼樣貧困的人,他在佛法中就是生起信心,他能夠持淨戒,他能夠時常背誦佛所說的教法,他能夠在他最最困難時還能布施予人。所以他是因為恭敬三寶,才能夠有這個信心,才能夠持戒,能夠背誦佛的教法,能夠真心去做布施,因為這樣他能得生天堂來了。」
Sakra replied, "I knew long ago that this person would be reborn in Tusita Heaven because when he was in the mundane world despite being very poor, he still found faith in the Dharma. He upheld the precepts, and often recited the Buddha's teachings. He helped others even when he was in a difficult situation. Because of his respect for the Three Treasures, he had faith and upheld the precepts. He recited the Buddha's teachings and helped others wholeheartedly. That is why he was reborn in Heaven".
大家聽到了,就起了恭敬心。
Hearing this, everyone felt reverent.
若於三寶生淨信
其心堅固不動轉
持所受戒不毀犯
當知此人不名貧
If one has pure faith in the Three Treasures, maintains a strong and unwavering resolve and upholds the precepts without transgressions, one is spiritually wealthy.
名為智慧壽命人
以敬無上三寶故
得生天上受勝樂
是故應當作斯學
《別譯雜阿含經》
This is a person with wisdom and longevity. Because of the great respect for the unsurpassed Three Treasure, one can be reborn in heaven and receive supreme joy. We should learn from this.
"Alternate Version of the Samyuktagama Sutra".
帝釋以偈文讚說:「若於三寶生淨信,其心堅固不動轉,持所受戒不毀犯,當知此人不名貧,名為智慧壽命人。以敬無上三寶故,得生天上受勝樂,是故應當作斯學。」
"If one has pure faith in the Three Treasures, maintains a strong and unwavering resolve and upholds the precepts without transgressions, one is spiritually wealthy. This is a person with wisdom and longevity. Because of the great respect for the unsurpassed Three Treasure, one can be reborn in heaven and receive supreme joy. We should learn from this.
各位,生天不是很困難,入佛門也是這麼樣的容易。只要你聽了生起恭敬,只要你能夠守持做人的規矩;只要你能夠心不離法,只要你能夠真正的想要幫助人,這四項就能得生天堂。
Everyone, it is not difficult to be reborn in heaven. It is also easy to practice Buddhism as long as you treat the Dharma with sincerity, retain it in your mind, act properly, and truly wish to help others. With these Four Deeds you can be born in heaven.
何況我們行於正法中,能為人間菩薩、聽正法。想想看,我們是不是很有福的人!
We are practicing and listening to the True Dharma as Living Bodhisattvas. Think about this, are we all not blessed?
所以大家要記得,悔在前就無悔在後。所以大家要時時多用心啊!
Please remember to repent at once and change, so you will not have regrets. So everyone, please always be mindful.
