《靜思晨語。法譬如水》277. 立四信業(一)

我們在《靜思晨語。法譬如水。生生世世廣四等心》說過了「四等心」。四等心就是「諸法平等、發心平等、道心平等、慈悲平等」四樣都要平等。我們要對人世間事物等等…不能起分別心,我們才能「立四信」。
Yesterday we talked about the Four Minds of Impartiality and how we should cultivate a non-discriminatory attitude toward all matters and phenomena. Then we can establish the Fourfold Faith.

信根本 信佛
信法 信僧
The Fourfold Faith: Faith in the Fundamentais, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.


我們若能對天下事物,能善解、能包容,自然我們事物平等,心就沒有那麼多煩惱,我們才能很清楚來立下四信。
If we can deal with all things by being understanding and accommodating, we can naturally regard al matters equally. Then, the mind will be free of vexations, and we can establish the Fourfold Faith with clarity.

根本就是真如之法
是諸佛所師、眾行之源
相「信根本」
修得真如本性現前
就能無所迷惑
The teachings of True Suchness are the Fundamentals, the teacher of all Buddhas and the origin of all practices. Have faith in the Fundamentals and practice until your True Nature appears. Then all confusion will be eliminated.


四信首先就是「信根本」,我們要相信根本。何謂「根本」?就是如來之法。
The Fourfold Faith includes the Fundamentals. We need to have faith in the Fundamentals. What are the Fundamentals? They are the teachings of the Buddha.
我們知道如來,如如不動,「真如之法」。因為我們眾生所以為眾生,就因我們脫離根本;我們人人若能回歸到如來真如之法,都就都是平等的。
We know that the Buddha was unwavering and spoke the Ultimate Truth. He reason why we remain sentient beings is because we have departed from the Fundamentals. Based on the teachings of Buddha-nature, we are all equal.
大家都知道,已經知道了——「心、佛、眾生都沒有差別」——。大家只是知道,不知道是否相信?相信之後,我們是否能自愛自尊重?不要使我們真如之法,任憑它脫離。
We all know it. The mind, Buddha and sentient beings are the same. We "know" it, but do we all believe it? Even after we believe it, do we have the self-respect and love needed to guard the teachings of True Suchness carefully and not let them fall away?
自己是否守真、守如?因為真如是「諸佛所師,眾行之源」,諸佛就是依歸於真如,所以真如是諸佛所學的去向。我們也是一樣,每天不也都是一樣叮嚀大家要找回我們的真如,依歸我們的真如。
Do we abide in the True Dharma? True Suchness is "teacher to all Buddhasand the origin of all practices. All Buddhas rely on their True Nature, which is what all Buddhas align themselves with. We do that, too. Don't always say we must rediscover our True Suchness and return to the source?
我們能人人相信,人人與佛同等這念真如清淨,我們若能相信,我們就能有所依歸,所以依靠真如。
We believe that Buddhas and all sentiment beings are equal in this pure True Nature. If we can believe this, we will have something to rely on. We will have our True Nature to rely on.
我們若能真如本性現前,那就能夠「三慧明、三達朗」,還有什麼能迷惑我們呢?
And if our True Nature is revealed to us with the Three Wisdoms and Three Insights, what can possibly confuse us?
所以真如之法是諸佛所師,是諸佛的老師,也是我們人人自我之師。所以我們要知道,真如是我們所要修行的根源,我們要提起時時愛樂的心,愛樂都是很珍惜,珍惜這個道。
The Dharma of True Suchness is the teacher of all Buddhas. Our True Nature is also our own teacher. So, we have to know that True Suchness is the root of our practice. We need to bring forth a heart of joy and cherish it. We need to cherish the Path.
我們若懂得珍惜,我們才能精進用功,知道如何找出這條道路,按照所指導,佛所見道,諸師大德一直告訴我們的。若能如此,有疼惜之道,自然我們就能相信;我們若不相信,自然道無法現前。即使道現前了,你也不懂得疼惜,不懂得愛樂。
Only when we learn to cherish the path can we practice steadfastly. We must follow the teachings proven by the Buddha and propagated by venerable sages. If we can do this, if we can cherish the Path, then naturally we can believe. If we cannot believe, then the Path will not be revealed to us. Even if it is revealed, we may not know to treasure it and take joy in it.
所以即使知道了,但是不能珍惜這個道,自然就不會追隨。所以我們很重要的就是要相信,相信根本。根本就是真如本性,諸佛菩薩就是依照這條路在走。所以我們必定要相信這個根本,真如的源頭。
If we only know about the Path, but do not treasure and cherish it, then of course we will not folow it. Most important is that we believe. Believe in the Fundamentals, in your innate Buddha-nature. All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas follow this Path. So we need to also believe in the Fndamentals, the source of True Suchness.

時常念佛、親近佛
起恭敬供養之心
發諸善根求一切智
即是「信佛」
Always be mindful of Buddha and draw near to Him. As an offering, give reverence. Develop goodness to attain all wisdom. This is having Faith in the Buddha.


第二就是要「信佛」,本來我們人人都是佛的弟子,既是佛的弟子,怎麼能不信佛,所以要信佛。
Second, we need to have Faith in the Buddha. Since we are all His disciples, how could we not have faith in Him? We need to have faith in Him.
信佛有無量的功德,佛陀內修外證,他自己修,修行很好,所以他能證明很多天地宇宙萬物的真理,所以這就是功德。他就是內能用功,外是莊嚴的形象,他能為我們指引一條道路,所以我們一定要相信佛。不只是相信佛有無量功德,我們還要再常念,要時時刻刻心念佛,行近佛。
Have faith in the Buddha's infinite merits. He practiced and realized the Truth. He practiced and attained great realization. He can prove the numerous truths of the universe. This is merit. The Buddha cultivated inwardly and outwardly manifested a dignified appearance. He showed us the Path, so we must have faith in Him. Not only should we have faith in Buddha's merits we must also always be mindful. Our minds should approximate the Buddha's and we should emulate His practices.
所以不是常常說:「我們念佛要念出佛心來。」對!念佛心,我們的心就是佛的心;有佛的心,靠近了佛,自然我們的行就能依教奉行。所以我們要信佛,常常念佛、親近佛。不只是念佛、親近佛,還供養、恭敬,發起了善根,求一切智,所以這叫做信佛。
Don't we often say that we should be mindful of the Buddha so that our minds are the same as His? Our minds are just like the Buddha's mind. When we have the mind of the Buddha, our behavior naturally follows the teachings. So, we need to have faith in, be mindful of, and draw close to the Buddha. Not only should we be mindful and draw near, we need to give offerings and reverence. We should bring forth all roots of goodness and seek all kinds of wisdom. This is having faith in the Buddha.
我們信佛,若我們不能起那分親近的心,若如此就不恭敬。
We say that we have faith in Him, but if we don't feel close to the Buddha, then we cannot give true respect.
供養,過去我也常說:「有利的供養,有敬的供養,有行的供養。」物質供養,其實這不是很重要。以恭敬的供養雖然需要,但是還不如身體力行的供養。所以不只是在那裡拜,那樣恭敬而已,其實要在人與人之間,互相的行動中那種和氣、互愛,這才是真正的行的供養。
In the past, I have talked about making offerings, offerings of wealth, offerings of reverence, and offerings of practice. Material offerings are really not very important. The offering of reverence is necessary, but it is not equal to the offering of practice. So it is not about worshipping or prostrating and paying respect like that. It really is about people. It is about appreciating each other and being in harmony. That is the true form of offering.
我們若能彼此和氣互愛,自然我們就培養那分無分別的大愛心,這就是因為信佛。
When we are in harmony and care for each other, we are cultivating non-discriminatory Great Love. And it is all due to having faith in the Buddha.

相信佛所說的教法
有益於人心
不只信佛所說
聞法入心更依法實修
即是「信法」
Have faith in the buddha's teachings, which benefit people's minds. Allow them to enter your heart and put them into practice. This is the Faith in the Dharma.


再來要「信法」。
Next, we need to have Faith in the Dharma.
我們要信法,就是因為已經知道佛陀所說的教法,對我們人人都有很大的利益;所以信仰佛陀的教法,依教奉行,為我們指出一條道路。
The Dharma is the Buddha's teachings. It brings great benefits to everyone. Having faith in the Buddha and practicing His teachings accordingly will provide us with a Path.
我們這一條道路,若能依照指導去走,我們就不會迷失了,能到達我們所要到的目的地。所以我們必定要相信,相信佛所說的法,對我們人人絕對有利益。
If we follow the Path laid down for us, we will sefely reach our destination, without getting lost. So, we must have faith that Buddha's teachings benefit all of us.
現在的世間,人人都是脫軌道,脫真理,都脫離掉了,所以才會使世間,人人的家庭倫理喪失殆盡。所以我們要信佛所說法,不只是信佛所說法,我們要常常念法。到底今天聽到什麼法呢?聽了常常放在心中,不只是放在心裡,我們要修而實行,所以這樣叫做信法。
Today, people have strayed from the Path, the true Way that Buddha laid down for us. They have gone astray. Family values have been compromised. So, we must have faith in the Buddha's teachings. Not only must we have faith, we must be mindful of the Dharma. "What Dharma have I heard today?". We should keep the Dharma we hear in our hearts, and think about it often. We do not just keep it in our heats, we must practice it, too. This is having Faith in the Dharma.

僧眾辭親割愛
立佛志、行佛行
求法度眾生
引導人人修福慧
故佛弟子要「信僧」
Monastics left their loved ones. They took the Buddha's vow and practice like the Buddha. They seek the Dharma to help sentient beings transform by cultivating blessings and wisdom. Buddha's disciples should have Faith in the Sangha.


再來就是「信僧」。
Next, we must have Faith in the Sangha.
什麼是「僧」?僧就是依佛所教身體力行,辭親割愛,求法度眾生。我們一直在求法,要去了解法,無非是要入人群去弘法,去度眾生。所以僧就是立佛志,行佛行,所以這就是僧。
Sangha are those who abide by and practice the Buddha's teachings. They have left their families and loved ones to learn Dharma for the sake of sentient beings. We are constantly seeking and trying to understand the Dharma. The purpose is to work among people to spread the Dharma and save sentient beings. The Sangha take the Buddha's vow and walk the Buddha's Paht.
僧也是「福田僧」,福田僧不只是受供養,福田僧就是你要修了那麼大的行,同時你要做個芸芸眾生心地的農夫,你要好好為人群耕耘心地,如何使凡夫心能修福慧?去指導他你如何去修福、如何修慧?用方法去為他下種子。所以僧也是芸芸人群中的農夫。
The Sangha is called "a field of blessing, not just because they accept offerings, but because while practicing great spiritual cultivation, they also serve as farmers who cultivate the minds of all sentient beings. They diligently cultivate the fields of people's minds and guide them to cultivate blessing and wisdom. They use various means to plant those seeds. So Sangha are the farmers amidst the people.
所以我們要相信僧乃是福田僧,去引導人人修福慧,所以我們要相信僧。
We believe the Sangha is a field of blessing that teaches people how to cultivate merits and wisdom. So, we need to have faith in the Sangha.
僧一定要「修正行」,要淨己之心,淨自己的心,不能有所偏差,同時也要淨他人之心,這都在行為中。所以我們要好好在正思、正見、正思惟中去修、去實行,若能如此就是自利利他。
The Sangha must "cultivate the right practices" and purify their minds. If their minds are pure, they do not go astray. Meanwhile, they must also purify others' minds. This is all related to their behavior. So we need to foster. Right Thought and Right View, and practice them. Then we benefit ourselves and others.
常常在說的「八正道」,大家都在背。這個「正」字就是我們修行者,不能偏差的地方。所以常樂親近,好好求學這個道——佛陀所說法,利益人群的八正道——。
We often speak of the Eightfold Right [Noble] Path. You all memorized it. The word "Right" refers to how we cannot go astray. So, we find joy in being near the Sangha. We need to learn the Dharma well. The Buddha taught the Eightfold Noble Path to benefit sentient beings.
自己沒好好正,哪能走出這條路呢?所以這叫做信僧。
Without the right direction how can we even walk the path? So, we need to have Faith in the sangha.
如此有四信,信根本、信佛、信法、信僧。
This is the Fourfold Faith in the Fundamentals Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
所以根本就是真如,大家要好好用心。其實我們大家有緣,我們所選擇的是菩薩道這條道路,但是開始在起步時,步步艱辛,非常艱難,但是方向對準去走,再艱難坎坷,還是一樣能走過來。
The Fundamentals are True Suchness. We ned to be very mindful of this. All of us have affinities with one another. The path we chose is the bodhisattva-path. But when we first began, every step of the way was difficult. However, once we head in the right direction, no matter how challenging, we will surely complete the joumey.

靜思法脈內修四法
願立信而無憂
志堅實而無求
內自誠而無悔
心行正而無怨

The practitioners of the Jing Si Dharma-lineage should practice the fourfold Dharma. We vow to have faith without worries; we are firm in our resolve, asking nothing in return; we are honest without regrets; we are true and upright, without resentment.


因為本來前面沒有路,我們對準了這個方向到那個方向,應該是大直道。這個道的方向既然知道了,這個道理我們已經知道了,所以對準了這個方向,所以我們就要很殷勤來開路,這條路終於用心,從起點一直開拓荒。真的是拓荒者,一片雜草叢生,根本看不到路。不過心能有那分正確的理的觀念,自然我們就有「信」。
Previously, you had no path. But once you found the right direction, it became a broad, straight path. We learned the direction of the path and understood the teachings. Hencefroth, we aim for the right direction and diligently forge a path. Be very mindful. We begin at our starting point and blaze a trail. This is the way of a true pioneer. Before, it was overgrown with weeds and hidden from sight. However, if we uphold the right principles in our minds, faith comes naturally.
剛才說的若無信,我們哪能夠靠近佛呢?所以我們要先信有真如的道理,真如的道理是清淨,清淨的道理就是要入人群,去淨化他人。
As we just said, without faith how could we draw near to the Buddha? So, we must first have vaith in True Suchness. The principle of True suchness is purity, it is to interact with people and help pruify them.
單獨淨,周圍就污穢,這樣不算是佛法在人群中;所以我們必定要佛法在人群中,就是要淨化人心,這就是我們的方向。我們在克難中,建立了這道門和路,用什麼工具呢?當然就是要建立信。我們信,有信就是願,將願立信,沒有憂愁;我們信而無憂,不必怕,應該是這樣。
Attaining purity oneself while ignoring others, is not spreaing the Buddha-Dharma to others. To spread the Buddha-Dharma we must help others realize a pure heart. This is our direction. Amidst many hardships we have created this Dharma-door and path. What tools did we use? First we established faith. With faith, we made vows. Vows strengthen our faith and we have no worries. When we have faith there is no doubt or fear. It should be this way.
儘管在走這條路的時候,有很多人懷疑,靜思這個道場要以何維生,才能凝聚這股力量?才能如何向行對準?這也要先有道糧,才能成長我們的慧命。有了慧命,心有營養,才能真正信真如,所以我們必定要立信。
As they walk the path, many people question how our Jing Si spiritual center will sustain itself. They wonder how our efforts can be united, and how to go in the right direction on the path. First we need to have "food for cultivation, to feed our Wisdom-life. After we have Wisdom-life, our hearts will be properly nurtured with. Faith in the Fundamentals and True Suchness. So, we must first establish faith.
前面的四信,都是我們對準了方向,不必擔憂,所以「願立信而無憂」。
The fourfold faith we discussed helps us focus and set the right direction.
我們還要「志堅實而無求」,我們要立定我們的志氣,所以我們的生活,向外無求,腳踏實地自力更生。所以我們必定要志堅,我們的道才能實,大家甘願自力更生,所以志堅實而無求。
Then there is no ned to worry. "We vow to have faith with no worries, be firm in our resolve and ask nothing in return". We need to have firm resolve. We do not ask for anything in return. We work diligently and are self reliant. We must have firm resolve so that we remain firmly on the path. In this way, wa naturally are willing to work diligently are willing to work diligently.
內呢,對我們自己的內心,「內自誠而無悔」。這是我們大家很願意,有志一同,要從我們內心啟發出來,最誠懇最虔誠的心,既然來到經舍這個道場。我們的法脈就是在「無後悔」,我們不只是堅立信心,堅定實行,還要從內心發出,無論遇到什麼關卡難關,我們都不後悔。
And internally? In our hearts "we are honest and without regret". We are all willing to work toward a common goal. From the deepest part of our hearts, we bring froth utmost sincerity and reverence. Since we have come to the Jing Si Abode, we follow our Dharma-lineage without regret. Not only are we firm in our vows, we embody them in our actions. From the deepest part of our hearts we vow that we will never have regrets, no matter what challenges we encounter.
再來就是「心行正而無怨」。我們既然願意為佛教、為眾生,我們的心和身,心要正,行要正,心行正,無論外面的環境如何,我們都還是無怨。
"Our minds and actions are true with no complaint". Since we vowed to devote ourselves to Buddha-Dharma and to all sentient beings, we must adopt, with mind and body, the proper attitude. The mind must be upright. Regardless of our external conditions, we must have no resentments.
其實內修四法,那就是我們靜思的法脈。
To practice this Fourfold Dharma is our Jing Si Dharma-lineage.
外行也有四法,就是「慈悲喜捨」,人人很普遍在事物中,一定要有慈悲喜捨。對我們修行者內心,一定要信實誠正,這就是我們要建立的信。
There is also the external Fourfold Dharma. They are kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. In our everyday interacitons we must have kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity Inernally, we must cultivate faith, honesty, sincerity and integrity. This is our faith.
各位,大家要用心,我們靜思,大家在修行,一定要堅持內心的四法;對外對事對物,一定要力行慈悲喜捨四法,所以人人要時時多用心!
Everyone, we need to be very mindful. As we practice here, we must firmly uphold the Fourfold Dharma. In our interactions, we must use the Dharma of kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. So everyone, please always be mindful.
